Warning on 'second-press' gold in the market: Hard to distinguish from the original
Timuçin Sönmez, President of the Ankara Chamber of Jewelers and Watchmakers, warned consumers against second-strike gold coins produced outside the Mint.
Timuçin Sönmez, President of the Ankara Chamber of Custodians and Watchmakers of Ankara, warned consumers about quarter, half, and Republic gold coins that are illegally produced in the market and referred to as second strikes. It was stated that these gold coins are difficult to distinguish from the original, may contain lower fineness or weight, and can lead to financial losses during resale.
Timuçin Sönmez, President of the Ankara Chamber of Jewelers and Watchmakers, issued warnings noting that second-strike gold coins, which are offered for sale at lower prices in the market, have started to spread recently. It was emphasized that the minting and distribution of second-strike quarter, half, or Republic gold coins—produced in unauthorized workshops outside the Mint using molds similar to the original—is illegal.
It was noted that second-strike gold coins carry the risk of lower fineness and weight. Although they look very similar to the original, details may be less clear or rough, and citizens find it difficult to distinguish this situation on their own, which experts can only notice through precise measuring devices or detailed examinations. It was reported that consumers should shop from trusted, established, and corporate jewelers to avoid grievances, check the box, packaging, and the markings on them, and definitely obtain and keep a receipt or invoice. In addition, critical warnings regarding the issue were made by the Consumers' Association.
