World Bank Cancels Loan to Brazilian Agribusiness Company
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank, has withdrawn a $20 million loan to the Brazilian agribusiness company Grupo Agronorte following pressure from environmental organizations.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private lending arm of the World Bank, has canceled its $20 million loan plan for the Brazilian agribusiness company Grupo Agronorte. The decision followed a campaign launched by indigenous communities and environmental organizations concerned about deforestation.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has withdrawn the $20 million loan it planned to provide to the Brazilian company Grupo Agronorte, which operates soy processing activities for animal feed. The loan, announced in March, faced increasing pressure from a coalition of environmental organizations and the indigenous Apinajé community. These groups argued that the financing would accelerate deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado regions.
Environmental advocates stated that the founder of Agronorte, Gilmar Gonçalves Carvalho, is facing a federal lawsuit in Brazil over allegations of destroying approximately 5,000 acres of rainforest near indigenous lands. It was stated that the company lacks systems to guarantee that its soy does not come from illegally cleared land, which contradicts the bank's environmental policies. The IFC has removed the project from its disclosure portal and has not issued an official statement on the matter.
