A new study led by Nahass and colleagues revealed that AI-based electronic alert systems can positively impact inpatient survival rates by automatically triggering rapid response teams.

Scope of the Research

Nahass and the research team thoroughly evaluated the effects in a hospital setting of an AI-powered electronic alert system that automatically activates a rapid response team.

Method and Participants

The researchers were able to compare high-risk adult inpatient admissions before and after the implementation of this system, which automatically triggers a timely bedside assessment.

Admissions of adult patients with an Epic Deterioration Index score of at least 60 were examined across 11 different hospital campuses, with thousands of patients included in the study overall.

Decrease in Mortality Rates

According to the findings, unadjusted in-hospital mortality rates dropped from 23.1 percent before the implementation of the system to 18.6 percent following implementation.

Frequency of Intervention

During the research process, rapid response team activations increased from 25.3 percent to 37.5 percent, while no significant increase was observed in transition rates to higher levels of care.
