The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has been awarded a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to lead a project that will help preemptively identify potential risks in the food supply chain.
Interinstitutional Collaboration
The four-year project is being carried out in partnership with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The project will strengthen research capacity in Hawaiʻi and Nebraska while preparing the next generation of scientists.

The project will combine artificial intelligence, environmental sampling, and advanced genetic analysis to identify risks targeting aquaculture, livestock, and agricultural systems.

While current monitoring methods typically detect problems only after outbreaks occur, this project aims to establish early warning systems by continuously analyzing environmental data.
