Besxar, launched by former OpenAI staffer Ashley Pilipiszyn, has set out to manufacture semiconductors in space and has secured significant financial support toward this goal.
The startup managed to raise a total of approximately $14 million in funding, including a $9 million seed investment round led by Dauntless Ventures and Overture VC.
Space Manufacturing and Infrastructure Advantages
Earth-based chip factories require massive infrastructure projects because the manufacturing process demands pressurized cleanrooms to block microscopic dust and pollutants.
Pilipiszyn argues that the vacuum of space provided by next-generation rockets can serve as an alternative to this costly infrastructure need, and aims to produce raw materials for advanced semiconductors in space.
Initial Test Flights with SpaceX Rockets
The company has reached an agreement to conduct a dozen orbital flights using SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket boosters and has initiated its testing processes.
The first two small tubes, called 'fabships', sent to space during a Starlink mission in July successfully completed their goals of surviving the launch and protecting samples.
Future Plans and Target Market
Besxar plans to continue developing its systems over the next two years, ultimately flying fully equipped factories on larger vehicles such as the SpaceX Starship.
Once production qualification samples are obtained, the company aims to supply wafers to leading manufacturers of advanced power chips used in data centers, robots, and electric vehicles.
