Apple has announced a new "Reference Image" feature with the iPhone 18 Pro series, which will prove that photos taken by users have not been altered by artificial intelligence.

The new system uses signed data captured by the device's camera sensor. This data is converted into an unalterable reference image through Apple's cloud computing service.
Verification in the Photos App
These generated reference images can be viewed in the Photos app. Users can compare this reference version with other versions to detect any changes made to the photos.
Developer API Support
Apple has announced that it will offer dedicated APIs to developers across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS platforms so that this technology can also be used by third-party applications.
Supported Standards
The new feature supports industry standards such as SynthID and C2PA. This allows visual verification processes to work compatibly across a broader ecosystem.
