It has been reported that the amount of electronic waste resulting from the artificial intelligence boom has been calculated to be much lower until now. According to a new report, a massive global waste crisis is on the horizon when data center infrastructures and all related hardware are taken into account.

Behind the invisible and digital nature of artificial intelligence models lies an extremely complex hardware infrastructure. Experts emphasize that companies and governments must take precautions against this massive wave of waste now.

Expanded Scope and Waste Projections

While previous research focused solely on servers and graphics processing units, the new report also takes power distribution, cooling systems, and network equipment into account. Furthermore, AI proliferation affecting personal devices and telecommunications infrastructure is included in the scope.

According to the calculations, the total accumulated electronic waste by 2050 is estimated to be between 395 million and 617 million metric tons.

Global Recycling Challenges

Less than a quarter of the annual electronic waste generated worldwide is officially collected and recycled. The remaining portion harms the environment and workers by being burned or buried in unregulated collection sites.

The fact that countries with the highest data center concentration, such as the US, have not ratified the Basel Convention paves the way for hazardous waste to be sent abroad and informal recycling processes.
