According to a new public opinion poll, the majority of Americans are concerned about artificial intelligence technologies consuming electricity and water resources.
A newly conducted poll revealed that more than half of adults in the US are concerned about the environmental damage caused by artificial intelligence. While this rate shows a significant increase compared to last year, the depletion of resources by data centers in local areas ranks among the public's biggest fears.
Rising Concern Revealed by the Research
Data from interviews conducted in August with 3,424 US citizens showed that 53 percent of participants are extremely or very concerned about the environmental impacts of artificial intelligence. The upward trend of this rate, which was 41 percent last year, indicates a rise in societal awareness.
Institutions Behind the Poll and Its Scope
The public opinion research in question was jointly conducted by The Associated Press, NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago. The findings indicated that the public's fear of artificial intelligence's carbon footprint is much greater than that of other high-emission sectors such as meat production and aviation.
Pressure on Local Communities
Concerns are growing regarding how local data centers supporting artificial intelligence and cloud computing will affect their surrounding communities. Most poll participants worry about the negative impacts of these facilities on electricity prices and water resources in the regions where they are built.
Political Tendencies and Demographic Distribution
While Democrats played a major role in this rise in ecological awareness, two-thirds of Democrats expressed major concern. This rate constituted half among independents and four-tenths among Republicans, showing the existence of differing approaches among political parties.

Despite bipartisan objections, thousands of data centers exist across the US, and large-scale construction continues to meet the increasing demand. Virginia and Texas lead in operating facilities, while states such as California, Ohio, and New York closely follow them in this field.

Data centers that hold water to cool artificial intelligence chips and computers are criticized for drawing water from other fields that need resources, such as agriculture and farmers.
