Eastern Illinois Student Senate Prepares for Artificial Intelligence Resolution
Preparations are underway for a new resolution demanding that the university administration regulate the use of artificial intelligence.
The Eastern Illinois University Student Senate announced it is drafting a resolution to address the current lack of regulations regarding how academics use artificial intelligence in course curricula, assignments, and grading.
Artificial Intelligence and Lack of Regulation
Student Body President Mason Tegeler read a written statement indicating that the absence of rules concerning the use of artificial intelligence by faculty and staff leads to various issues. It was stated that this deficiency causes uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence in course content, assignments, grading processes, and marketing activities.
Resolution to be Presented at the Next Meeting
Senate Spokesperson Megan Fox stated that the drafted resolution will be put to a vote at the next meeting, demanding that the university take action in this area. It was noted that the resolution will be supported alongside a petition presented by students at the Artificial Intelligence Forum on September 23.
Student Participation and Signature Process
Senate members and the campus community were urged to support the resolution by signing it via the link in the SGA Instagram story. Furthermore, it was announced that registration for public comment can be made at the beginning of the next meeting.
Fall Special Election Timeline
President Mason Tegeler shared the timeline for the fall semester special elections, announcing that the elections will begin on the morning of October 14 and conclude on the night of October 15. It was stated that the application process for candidacy will begin on Friday and run until October 9.
Election Events and Information
Executive Vice President Sam Erwin presented the schedule for the Operation EIU Votes events to be held throughout October. It was stated that various informational panels addressing registration processes and the impact of elections on university students will be organized.
