European Union draft on social media and artificial intelligence for under-15s
The European Union is planning new restrictions for users under 15 in order to ensure children have secure access to digital platforms.
A new regulatory draft prepared by the European Union envisages introducing age-dependent restrictions for children under 15 on digital platforms, including social media and artificial intelligence tools.
General Scope of the Regulatory Draft
The European Union is carrying out comprehensive regulatory preparations regarding children's use of digital platforms. The draft covers a wide range of services, from social media to artificial intelligence chatbots.
Account Models by Age Groups
According to the draft, children will be able to open their own accounts starting from the age of 15. In contrast, a parent-controlled account model will be applied to the 13-14 age group, and usage times on these accounts will be limited.
Rules for Younger Age Groups
Accounts in the three to 12 age group will be entirely under parental control and only services meeting safety standards will be permitted. Children under three years of age will not be able to access the services within the scope.
Platforms Within the Scope
The regulation will not be limited to social media and video sharing platforms. Artificial intelligence chatbots and online games will also be included in the scope and affected by the new rules.
Obligations Imposed on Companies
Companies will be asked to avoid designs that may cause addiction and will be provided with tools through which they can report harmful content to children. Furthermore, technology companies are expected to pay a supervisory fee.
