As part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission aiming to accelerate scientific discoveries with artificial intelligence, four research teams led by Duke University were among the 278 projects nationwide.

Project Details and Faculty Distribution

The four research teams led by Duke University were selected from the Pratt School of Engineering and the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. These teams cover electrical and computer engineering, physics, and materials science.

Funding Amount and Resources

Total funding awards across the projects range between $500,000 and $750,000. Additionally, the teams will gain access to advanced artificial intelligence models through the Genesis Mission Platform and consortium partners.

Research Areas and Names

Among the funded projects, Gaurav Arya works on DNA nanotechnology and nanomaterials, while Steffen Bass investigates the equation of state for nuclear matter. Kate Scholberg analyzes neutrino data to track exploding stars, and Yiran Chen develops energy-efficient hardware for AI-powered robots.

Future Stages and Process

Following this initial nine-month funding period, successful teams will become eligible to apply for a larger Phase Two award that could last up to three years.
