The German Federal Government has updated its 2026 gross domestic product growth expectation to 1.3 percent as part of the Ministry of Economy's autumn projection. This revision, which exceeds the 0.5 percent forecast announced in April, reflects the unexpected resilience shown by the German economy despite the energy crisis and geopolitical risks.

Key drivers of growth

The Ministry of Economy cited the momentum in export volume, government investments, and the increase in defense spending as the main reasons for the rise in the growth forecast. German foreign trade was supported by inventory increases in energy-intensive products, benefiting from the easing of global supply chain bottlenecks.

Expectations for future years

The government also raised its 2027 growth forecast from 0.9 percent to 1.1 percent. However, it is projected that the growth rate will decline to 0.6 percent for 2028. It is emphasized that the economic trajectory depends on the course of the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Government's reform agenda

Federal Minister of Economy Katherina Reiche stated that growth is on fragile ground and drew attention to the importance of structural reforms. Reiche expressed the need to reduce bureaucracy, increase flexibility in working hours, and bring energy prices down to competitive levels.

Cautious approach from the business world

The German Foreign Trade Association and the Association of Chambers of Industry and Commerce are of the opinion that the recovery has not yet solidified. Experts argue that growth is based on debt-financed spending and could be short-lived unless fundamental reforms are implemented.
