During its annual strategic plan reviews, the Kansas Board of Regents established developing a framework for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in student education, academic research, and administrative oversight as a top priority.
Duties of the Artificial Intelligence Committee
Regent Neelima Parasker, president and CEO of the technology company SnapIT Solutions, was selected to chair the committee responsible for studying artificial intelligence and drafting guidelines for the Board of Regents to review.
The committee's work will include examining artificial intelligence activities at universities, addressing statewide artificial intelligence priorities for higher education, and considering its role in workforce development.
Differences Among Universities
Parasker noted that large language models used to generate human-like language vary from university to university across Kansas.
These differences among universities will be among the issues the artificial intelligence committee evaluates in order to advance a unified policy.
Ethical and Security Issues
The Board of Regents agreed that the committee should focus on developing principles for the responsible use of artificial intelligence and identifying effective practices that enhance student learning.
Additionally, the committee will address data privacy, cybersecurity, academic integrity, and other ethical concerns.
Approval of the Budget Proposal
Alysia Johnston, chair of the Board of Regents, stated that the higher education board should have addressed the artificial intelligence project earlier.
Concurrently with these developments, the board approved the budget proposal for the state's public higher education system, deciding to submit it to Governor Laura Kelly and the 2027 Kansas Legislature.
