Kazakhstan Considers Social Media Regulations for Under-16s
The administration of Kazakhstan has put new legislative amendments and age verification mechanisms on the table to enhance the digital security of children in the country.
Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov announced that legislative amendments are being considered to temporarily suspend and officially register existing accounts of online platform users under the age of 16.
Legislative Amendments and Parliamentary Process
The government of Kazakhstan has drafted legislative changes that require the registration of users under 16 on online platforms. These prepared regulatory changes are currently being examined in detail by the country's parliament, the Mazhilis.
Temporary Suspension of Accounts
According to an official statement made by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, the possibility of temporarily blocking existing accounts of individuals under 16 on online platforms is being discussed. A transition period is planned to ensure the smooth implementation of the new requirements.
Age Verification and Use of Artificial Intelligence
Following the adoption of the bill, special rules will be established to accurately verify the age of users. In preparing these rules, artificial intelligence-based identification systems and the existing mechanisms of the platforms will be taken into account.
Consultation Process with Industry Representatives
It was stated that the developed regulatory legal regulations will be discussed in detail with the representatives of online platforms in Kazakhstan before being implemented and will be shaped through a common consensus.
