Recent research shows that a large segment of citizens in the US share concerns that artificial intelligence technology could wipe out the human race.
A comprehensive public opinion poll conducted by Politico revealed that a significant portion of US adults believe artificial intelligence has the potential to destroy humanity and therefore support halting the technology's development processes.
Poll Results and Risk Perception
In the study conducted by Politico through London-based Public First, participants were asked whether artificial intelligence could destroy humanity.
One-third of the survey respondents saw this risk at a moderate level, while 17 percent rated it as almost certain and 20 percent as seriously high.
Distribution by Political Views
The study also examined in detail the relationship between participants' political tendencies and their perception of artificial intelligence risk.
Seventy percent of those who voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections found the risk average, while this rate was 60 percent among Donald Trump voters.
Demand to Halt Development
A considerable segment of 48 percent of participants advocate for suspending artificial intelligence development work in order to mitigate risks.
In contrast, a 31 percent segment wants the work to continue on the grounds that advanced artificial intelligence could provide significant benefits.
Approach to Executive Warnings
About half of the public sincerely believes tech company executives' warnings that artificial intelligence could destroy humanity.
Twenty-six percent of participants think that such statements are a marketing strategy designed to make products look powerful.
Disagreement Between Industry and Politics
Debates continue as executives of leading companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Tesla, and SpaceX call for a slowdown in development.
The Donald Trump administration, on the other hand, argues that instead of new regulations, encouraging innovation and slowing down would give an advantage to China.
