New Case Studies Published for Artificial Intelligence Use in Criminal Justice

The Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) Artificial Intelligence Task Force has released three new case studies illustrating how AI tools can be applied in policing, public defense, and corrections facilities.

AI Framework and Case Studies

The Artificial Intelligence Task Force within the Council on Criminal Justice has published three case studies that operationalize the framework prepared for agencies and communities to evaluate artificial intelligence tools. This framework was previously announced to the public in March.

Areas Based on Real-World Scenarios

The published case studies were built upon three distinct real-world scenarios: police report writing, public defense research and drafting, and state-level corrections classification decisions.

Each case study follows the five decision phases of the prepared framework, extending from readiness assessment and risk weighing to procurement, implementation, and ongoing management.

Task Force Structure and Objectives

Established in June 2025, the 15-member nonpartisan task force includes technology developers, criminal justice practitioners, civil rights advocates, and researchers. Organizations such as RAND also support the efforts.

Task Force Chair Nathan Hecht along with CCJ President and CEO Adam Gelb emphasized the importance of responsible, accountable, and carefully considered AI adoption within the criminal justice system.
