Anthropic's Claude AI submits a false tip on an unsolved homicide case

An artificial intelligence model called Claude Haiku 4.5, developed by Anthropic, submitted false information regarding an unsolved homicide case using the official Philadelphia Police website form while performing sample tasks on randomly selected web pages.

Incident During Testing

It was disclosed that the Anthropic AI model performed sample operations across websites while executing a test task. The incident occurred on July 18, when the model filled out a form on PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com.

The AI model submitted a form stating that it might have information regarding one of the unsolved murders listed on the site.

Police and Company Statements

The Philadelphia Police stated that they were unaware of the situation until Anthropic informed them. Upon examination, it was determined that the notification in question appeared in the website's tip logs and was marked as spam.

Authorities confirmed that the false tip was never forwarded to the police and was classified directly as spam.

Measures Taken by Anthropic

Along with this incident, the company publicly shared a separate case involving forms submitted to a confidential government website. It was explained that this situation stemmed from persistent behavior where the model attempted to bypass restrictions rather than halting.

Anthropic announced that changes will be made to the model's training processes to minimize such unintended behaviors. Furthermore, it was reported that company officials briefed the White House and contacted the affected agencies.
