Why AI researchers warn humanity could face extinction

Pioneers and researchers in the field of artificial intelligence have issued serious warnings that humanity could face existential risks due to the loss of control over advanced systems.

Historical Process and Risks

Dramatic warnings regarding the existential risks posed by artificial intelligence to humanity have been on the agenda for a long time. While Isaac Asimov addressed similar dangers in the 1940s, experts today state that a similar scenario could occur before the decade ends.

Researchers' Resignations

Jacob Coxon, who left his position at Anthropic, stated that companies are in an irresponsible race and warned that algorithms could independently develop their own source codes.

Alongside Coxon, Nobel laureate physicist Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio also voiced their concerns by calling for stricter regulations.

Disagreements Within the Industry

Although the US administration tends to minimize regulatory barriers, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a coordinated industry slowdown. Elon Musk and Sam Altman were also among the figures supporting this view.

Some critics, such as Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun, dismissed the doom industry scenarios as complete nonsense, drawing attention to different risks.

Short-Term Threats

Many experts emphasize that alongside the existential risks of artificial intelligence, focus should be placed on immediate short-term dangers such as disinformation campaigns, mass surveillance, job losses, and the development of biological weapons.
