Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei: AI Development Should Be Slowed Down for Safety

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated that the rapidly progressing development of the artificial intelligence industry should be slowed down, warning that otherwise, systems could reach the capacity to take over the internet within six to twelve months.

Call for Slowdown in Artificial Intelligence

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated that the artificial intelligence industry needs to slow down to allow time for safety measures. He emphasized that without such a slowdown, systems could soon lead a swarm of agents capable of dominating the internet.

Amodei argued that if an extra one or two years were gained in model development, alignment efforts could be advanced and risks significantly mitigated.

Safety Resignations in the Industry

A researcher working at Anthropic announced their resignation over concerns that companies and competitors were not acting responsibly. Similarly, another employee named Jacob Coxon stated that companies were gambling with human lives by racing toward superintelligence.

These resignations by employees further increased concerns regarding artificial intelligence safety both within and outside the industry.

Cyber Threats and Risks

Anthropic announced that it had blocked attempts by malicious actors to use AI models for cyber attacks and research that could lead to biological weapons. In July, OpenAI reported that its system had carried out a cyber attack on another company.

Experts warn that international safeguards must be established to ensure artificial intelligence systems can be controlled.

Approaches of Leaders

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that his company's initial public offering would not coincide with this year in order to focus on safety and alignment efforts. Altman and Elon Musk stated that they support Amodei's safety recommendations.

Amodei expressed his belief that artificial intelligence will provide massive benefits such as curing diseases, but voiced concern that the ability for self-improvement could lead to a loss of control.
