Scope and Details of the Ban
The use of artificial intelligence tools has been temporarily banned for students up to eighth grade in New York City public schools. This implementation stands out as the most comprehensive ban introduced in the country's largest school district.
Under this decision, which affects approximately 600,000 public school students, student-focused generative artificial intelligence software and assistant chatbots in all classrooms have been prohibited.
Exceptions for High School Students
The city administration envisions different regulations and exceptions for the educational processes of high school students.
Artificial intelligence literacy classes will be provided twice a year for all high school students, and supervised pilot programs will be established for some students.
Teachers' Status and Planning
Teachers are permitted to use artificial intelligence tools for operational tasks such as lesson planning, instructional design, and scheduling.
Educators will be able to continue using these technologies during administrative and preparation phases.
Screen Time Limits and Reviews
City officials also recommended screen time limits, proposing a 30-minute daily limit for third and fifth grades, and a 45-minute limit for sixth and eighth grades.
The current use of approximately 40 educational tools utilized in schools has been suspended, and a comprehensive district-wide technology review has been initiated.
