Beijing Responds Harshly to Anthropic Executive's Remarks on Artificial Intelligence
The Beijing administration reacted to the senior executive of the US artificial intelligence company calling for restrictions on China's technological development, stating that global governance would be disrupted.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to claims by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei that China's artificial intelligence capacity should be limited and globally slowed down.
Reaction Statement from Beijing
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made evaluations on the subject at the regular press conference held on Monday.
The statement emphasized that spreading fear, conflict, and vicious competition benefit no one and will disrupt the global artificial intelligence governance process.
Warnings from the Anthropic Executive
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued in a lengthy essay published over the weekend that China taking the lead in artificial intelligence poses major risks for the US and the world.
Amodei suggested that restrictions on sales of chips and chip-making equipment to China should continue in order for the US to maintain its leadership.
Agenda of US and Chinese Leaders
US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are expected to discuss issues such as artificial intelligence governance at a meeting planned for September 24.
US President Trump stated in remarks on Sunday that the administration has moved past calls to slow down artificial intelligence development, declaring that his country leads in this field.
Cybersecurity and Allegations
The FBI, the National Security Agency, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a joint cybersecurity advisory last week.
The published report claimed that Chinese developers have made aggressive efforts to extract capabilities from US-based artificial intelligence models.
Response from China's Ministry of Commerce
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the US allegations as groundless, stating that the model distillation method is widely used by many companies in the industry.
The ministry also stated that the US is pursuing a monopoly in the artificial intelligence industry.
