While California State University is spending $13 million annually to provide ChatGPT access for its 470,000 students and employees, the University of California system is working on its own artificial intelligence strategies and potential partnerships.

CSU's Artificial Intelligence Initiative

California State University became the first system to sign a contract with OpenAI to provide artificial intelligence access to 470,000 students and 63,000 academic and administrative staff.

This agreement, costing $13 million a year, forms the basis of artificial intelligence-focused efforts within the university.

UC's Strategic Plans

The University of California is considering developing system-wide strategies rather than having campuses make separate agreements.

The artificial intelligence committee shared its plans, which prioritize security and governance principles without compromising speed, at the board of regents meeting.

Four Key Initiatives

The university administration is focusing on four main initiatives to reduce dependence on external providers and prevent risks.

In this context, system-wide access tools, a controlled artificial intelligence cloud, a public cloud partnership, and a learning platform are planned.
