Lightspeed Targets $250 Million for New AI-Focused India Fund
Venture capital firm Lightspeed is working on its new fund aimed at supporting early-stage artificial intelligence startups in India and Southeast Asia.
Silicon Valley-headquartered venture capital firm Lightspeed is aiming to raise $250 million for its new early-stage India fund, Lightspeed India Partners V, and has already secured commitments for 80% of that goal.
AI-Focused Strategy
Lightspeed is shaping its India strategy around artificial intelligence technologies, targeting a size of $250 million for its new early-stage fund.
The firm is among the investors in major AI companies such as Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks.
Fund Size and Current Status
Named Lightspeed India Partners V, the new fund has been designed at half the size of its previous $500 million fund raised in 2022.
According to a letter sent to investors, commitments have already been secured for 80% of the $250 million target.
Investment Timeline and Processes
The firm plans to start making investments with the new fund within two months and anticipates an investment period of roughly two and a half years.
It is stated that final investments will continue to be made through the existing fund until that period.
Alignment with Global Cycle
With this new fund, Lightspeed is aligning its India funds with the fundraising cycle of its global funds for the first time.
This move bears similarity to rival firm Accel's simultaneous fundraising step in August.
Regional Investment Focuses
The strategy of the new fund expects artificial intelligence to create more value across India and Southeast Asia than the internet did.
Investors see significant opportunities at the application layer thanks to the country's large developer pool and history in technology services.
