Signatures of AI leaders spark debate
The signatures made by tech giants while signing an artificial intelligence safety pact have become a subject of debate among handwriting experts and historians.
Prominent figures of the artificial intelligence industry drew attention with the chaotic and unusual appearances of their signatures while signing a voluntary safety pact alongside President Donald Trump.
Appearance at the Signing Ceremony
The biggest names in the AI industry signed a voluntary safety pact last week alongside President Donald Trump. While Trump's prominent and rehearsed signature appeared on the left side of the signature page, the tech leaders' signatures on the right looked quite chaotic and unusual.
Sundar Pichai of Google signed with a fluid line, while Jensen Huang of Nvidia preferred large, vertical capital letters slanted to the right. Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Elon Musk of xAI used messy handwriting, while Mark Zuckerberg of Meta left a tangled trailing line.
Generational Differences
Handwriting experts stated that this lack of care in the signatures might be a generational phenomenon. Jessie Nucifora, co-president of the New York-based Society of Scribes, emphasized that as people age, the care put into their signatures tends to increase.
Kelli Fetter, a founder of educational services, stated that the poor handwriting among tech leaders could stem from the fact that they came of age during a period when handwriting education was shifting.
Historical Context and Signatures
Historian Tamara Plakins Thornton stated that before the invention of the typewriter, handwriting was not a form of personal expression, but rather a standardized business skill. In the past, contracts and ledgers were written in specific styles.
A retired literature professor noted that some modern signatures resemble monograms from the past, with authors intentionally distorting certain letters to conceal or emphasize their identities.
Graphology Experts' Commentaries
Although psychologists and historians approach the field of graphology with skepticism, individuals specializing in this discipline evaluated the tech leaders' signatures. Experts suggested that the signatures could reflect traits such as impatience, determination, or childlike self-confidence.
However, it was frequently emphasized that such analyses are not an exact science and rely on subjective interpretations.
Doubts Regarding the Safety Pact
Alongside the signatures, the AI safety pact also raised questions regarding the document's integrity and accountability. Forensic document examination expert Jennifer Naso stated that the document lacked an official letterhead and appeared to be printed in a photocopy format.
Additionally, it was stated that the failure to notice a spelling error beneath Trump's name on the document indicated that the leaders signed it without reading it carefully.
