Perilous surrender: The Pentagon falls for artificial intelligence

The United States Department of Defense has launched a digital transformation drive at nearly every level of its operations with new artificial intelligence platforms made available to military and civilian personnel.

Launch of the GenAI.mil Platform

In December, the Department of Defense announced plans for the GenAI.mil platform, which includes advanced models for more than three million military personnel, civilian employees, and contractors. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced this step in an email in December and emphasized in a memorandum in January that the military must be transformed into an artificial intelligence-driven force.

Integration of Commercial Artificial Intelligence Tools

Various commercial generative artificial intelligence products, such as Google Cloud Gemini, Starshield AI Grok, and OpenAI ChatGPT Mil, have taken their place within GenAI.mil. OpenAI Vice President Joe Larson stated that this integration is carried out alongside human judgment, while Google Cloud products were also incorporated into the system with single-point access.

Dispute with Anthropic

Anthropic, which imposed usage restrictions on mass surveillance or lethal autonomous systems, was classified as a supply chain risk as a result of rejecting requests. Following this decision, the company's products were completely removed from national security assets.

Autonomous Warfare Command and Software Steps

Pentagon CIO Kirsten Davies signed accelerated mission software guidance for artificial intelligence-supported software development on August 31. Additionally, Secretary of Defense Hegseth announced in a statement in Quantico on September 30 that the Autonomous Warfare Command will be established as a four-star functional combatant command by October 1, 2027.
