Trade agreement negotiations between India and the United States have reached a plateau, making it harder to forge further compromises between the parties. This statement serves as the strongest official admission from New Delhi that negotiations on key issues regarding the deal targeted since February 2025 have stalled.

Tariffs and the Scope for Compromise

Following US President Donald Trump's signing into law of a congressional bill granting the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries purchasing significant amounts of oil from Russia—including India and China—the scope for a final compromise has narrowed considerably.

The Use of Tariffs in Trade

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized the increasing use of tariffs to address trade imbalances and their treatment as a weapon. It was stated that further give-and-take processes have now become extremely difficult for both sides.
