French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI has officially unveiled its new 1-trillion-parameter multimodal AI model Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, aiming to outpace its global competitors.

French AI laboratory Mistral AI introduced its new large multimodal model, Mistral Large 4, to the tech world on Tuesday. Known by the nickname Le Chonk, the model features 1 trillion parameters.
Access Plan and Safety Testing
The model is not yet available as an open-weight structure at this stage and can only be accessed via a general protection endpoint. Mistral plans to share the model weights within three weeks once safety testing is complete.
Training Process and Hardware Efficiency
Mistral Vice President of Science Pierre Stock stated that ML4 was trained on the company's own infrastructure using only 4,000 Nvidia GPUs. This figure represents a significantly lower hardware cost compared to Chinese and closed-source rivals.
Targeted Sectors and Investors
The company's main backers include Dutch giant ASML and Samsung. The new model offers optimized use cases for enterprise customers in critical areas such as cybersecurity, finance, and chip design.
