New Era of AI-Focused Private Schools Begins in Massachusetts

The state of Massachusetts is preparing to introduce a new private school that diverges from the traditional classroom setup by adopting artificial intelligence and a personalized learning model. Alpha School aims to have students complete their core academic education in about two hours a day by opening three new branches in the Greater Boston area this fall.

AI-Powered Education Model

Alpha School utilizes personalized learning technology to determine students' academic levels and tailor lessons to their individual paces. Co-founder MacKenzie Price emphasizes that the system goes far beyond embedding a chatbot on a student's computer, allowing every child to progress at their own speed.

Thanks to this technology, different students in the same classroom can work on completely different subjects suited to their specific levels. Thus, the flexibility offered by AI-driven personalized academic learning aims to fundamentally transform traditional education molds.

Views of Parents and Students

Paul Karger, one of the parents enrolled in the system, highlighted the importance of personalized education and noted that he withdrew his eight-year-old son from a traditional private school to enroll him here. Karger stated that his child displayed a much more positive attitude toward learning after spending a trial day at the campus in New York.

Tuition Fees and Teacher Compensation

While the school's annual tuition is set at $65,000, one of the justifications for this high fee is that the guides serving in the classrooms receive a salary of at least $100,000. Co-founder Price stated that the adults in the classrooms are heroes and should be compensated as they deserve.

Approximately half of the guides at Alpha come from a traditional educational background, while the rest hail from different sectors, primarily focusing on providing motivation and emotional support to students.

Workshops and Scope

Students spend the remaining six hours of the day in workshops designed to develop skills such as entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and public speaking. Serving from kindergarten through the eighth grade, the school has a total capacity of approximately 500 students across its three locations in Greater Boston.
