OpenAI says working with Samsung on next-generation chips, deepening cooperation

OpenAI is strengthening its partnership with Samsung Electronics through next-generation chip production and research as part of its process to develop its own artificial intelligence chips.

Joint Efforts with Samsung

OpenAI Korea General Manager Harrison Kim addressed the importance of joint chip production and research activities conducted with Samsung Electronics at a press conference held in Seoul.

Harrison Kim stated that one of the areas where they have made the most progress and received the most appreciation with Samsung Electronics is their joint work on next-generation chips.

Large-Scale Global Deployment

Samsung Electronics also hosts one of the largest-scale deployments and usage areas for ChatGPT globally.

Samsung Electronics stated that it could not confirm information regarding customer relationships.

Semiconductor Sector and Memory Demand

Last year, Samsung and SK Hynix signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data center project.

Harrison Kim emphasized that the demand for memory chips will continue to rise and that cooperation with South Korean semiconductor suppliers remains a priority.

Increase in Enterprise Users

On the other hand, the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users in South Korean companies and institutions increased approximately 28-fold as of the end of August compared to the previous year.

This adaptation process is expected to accelerate even further following the release of the latest model, GPT-6 Astra, which was launched on September 4.
