OpenAI GPT-6 Astra Model Autonomously Completes Portal Game
OpenAI's new model, GPT-6 Astra, achieved a notable feat by autonomously completing Valve's Portal game during a 24-hour broadcast.
In an experiment conducted by AI enthusiast CozyBlaze, OpenAI's next-generation flagship model, GPT-6 Astra, played and completed Valve's popular puzzle game Portal from start to finish without any human intervention.
Details of the Autonomous Gaming Experiment
An AI and large language model enthusiast named CozyBlaze conducted an interesting experiment to test the capabilities of OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra model. The model managed to play Valve's classic 3D puzzle game Portal entirely on its own.
Cost and Tool Usage
During this challenging gaming test process, the AI model made a total of 3,336 tool calls. The total API token cost of the process was calculated at $571.18. The experimenter stated that this cost was covered under the $200 Codex Pro subscription.
The model provided in-game controls through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and a modified SourcePauseTool software.
Method Followed During the Game
While GPT-6 Astra was thinking about the game, the gameplay was paused. The model analyzed screenshots and player character position information, and then sent input sequences to resume the game.
While the edited highlights video lasted about two hours, the total of all live broadcast recordings reached 24 hours.
Capabilities of the Next-Generation Model
Becoming OpenAI's flagship in early September 2026, GPT-6 Astra offers a new generation level of intelligence. OpenAI claims that this model harbors state-of-the-art capabilities in computer use, web browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work domains.
