Paul Christiano has been appointed to the OpenAI Foundation Board of Directors while also serving as a non-voting observer on the OpenAI Group PBC Board of Directors. Christiano has also joined the Foundation Board's Safety Committee, working alongside board chair Zico Kolter.
Public Sector and Expertise Experience
Paul Christiano serves as a senior technical advisor at the Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute within the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the U.S. Department of Commerce. Having served in two different American administrations, Christiano has worked on frontier model evaluations and approaches to mitigating national security risks.
Past Work and About the Foundation
The founder of the Alignment Research Center, Christiano led alignment research at OpenAI from 2017 to 2021 and made foundational contributions to reinforcement learning. The OpenAI Foundation operates as an independent charitable organization that aims to ensure artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity and holds control over OpenAI Group PBC.
