Purpose and Target Audience of the Program
The new master's program, housed within the Rice University Department of Computer Science, will begin accepting applications starting this fall. The program appeals to students with a computer science background, working engineers, scientists, and technologists aiming for careers building and deploying artificial intelligence systems.
Curriculum and Graduation Requirements
It was stated that by enrolling in the 30-credit-hour, non-thesis professional degree program, students will prepare for potential jobs as AI architects, applied AI researchers, and AI and machine learning engineers.
Leadership and Expert Insights
Luay Nakhleh, dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computer Science, emphasized that artificial intelligence is rapidly transitioning from research laboratories into systems shaping the ways we work, learn, and solve complex problems.
Chris Jermaine, chair of the Rice Department of Computer Science, stated that Houston is well-positioned to connect students with industries where AI is increasingly utilized, such as healthcare, energy, aerospace, finance, and technology.
On-Campus Education and Internship Opportunities
Spanning three semesters, the on-campus degree program will include coursework on AI fundamentals alongside traditional hands-on learning. Students will have easy access to faculty and the opportunity to collaborate in small cohorts, and the program includes a mandatory internship prior to completion.
Regional Universities and Strategic Plan
While other universities in Texas offer similar degrees, it was reported that the MAI program operates as part of the university's Momentous strategic plan, which includes the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
