Shopify Opens Checkout Process to Browser-Based AI Agents
E-commerce platform Shopify has initiated a new era that allows browser-based AI agents to complete purchases directly on behalf of users.
While some retailers like Amazon and Adidas block AI agents from shopping, Shopify adopted a different strategy by allowing browser-based agents to complete the checkout phase.
New Step for AI Agents
Shopify announced that browser-based AI agents will not only be able to search for products but also complete purchase transactions directly on merchant sites. With this move, the capabilities of agents have been moved beyond the shopping cart stage.
WebMCP Support and Checkout Process
Agents, which previously could perform inventory scanning and cart creation operations with WebMCP support, can now read and update the checkout screen. Checkout steps, including Shop Pay, can be performed with user consent without the need for screenshots or page scraping.
New Tools and Rollout
The system offers three new tools named get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. In this way, agents can change address or delivery options and place the order after the user grants authorization. The feature is being rolled out to all eligible merchants.
UCP Protocol and Direct Partnerships
Shopify uses the WebMCP standard for in-browser agents in addition to its server-side Model Context Protocol server. All of this infrastructure is built on top of the Universal Commerce Protocol, while partnerships have been established with leading AI agents such as Muse and Instinct.
