Differences between the original image and the AI-generated version were noticed by students; specifically, it was seen that a Hispanic student was replaced with an AI-generated Black female student.

Billy Ramirez, one of the students whose face was removed from the photo, expressed his concerns regarding this practice by the university concerning how students are represented.

Following the backlash, Stanford University acknowledged that the alterations and the lack of notification violated the institution's artificial intelligence policy.

In a statement issued by the university, it was stated that the promotional materials in question were removed and additional training efforts are being carried out for staff.
