Tensions Rise Between AI-Powered Food Delivery Startup Bites and DoorDash
The unauthorized listing of restaurants by the Bites startup via ChatGPT has triggered a new rivalry and sectoral debate with DoorDash.
DoorDash has warned restaurants against the Bites startup, which offers direct ordering via ChatGPT and bypasses traditional food platforms.
DoorDash's Warning Letters
In August, DoorDash sent warning letters to certain restaurants in the Bay Area, notifying them that these businesses might have been listed on the Bites platform without their consent.
The company stated that such practices could lead to legal issues and provided instructions for restaurants to remove themselves from the platform.
The Business Model of the Bites Startup
Founded by Bala Subramaniam and Matt Maloney, the 10-person startup Bites enables food ordering through ChatGPT by charging a flat additional fee of $1 per order.
Having established direct partnerships with point-of-sale systems like Toast and Square, the startup bypasses traditional apps that charge high commissions.
Restaurants' Search for Cost Solutions
Some restaurant owners, such as Jay Jayaraman, are redirecting orders to low-commission alternatives like Bites instead of DoorDash in order to increase profit margins and protect customer data.
AI Conflicts in the Sector
While major tech platforms and service providers clash over AI-powered shopping assistants, similar legal disputes are also taking place between companies like Amazon and Perplexity.
