Two New Reports from the European Commission on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies on Education

The European Commission has published two new reports examining the impact of generative artificial intelligence technologies on education stakeholders and the adaptation of education systems to the digital transition.

The Place of Artificial Intelligence in Education

The review titled 'Friend or Foe?', published by the European Commission, reveals that generative artificial intelligence is transforming into a tool that is spreading slowly but steadily in educational practices across the European Union.

Teacher Training and the Need for Support

It is stated that the benefit that artificial intelligence will provide to learning outcomes depends on how the technology is used, while its impact on long-term skills is not yet clear. In this context, it is emphasized that teachers need professional development.

The State of Digital Education in Schools

The second report, titled 'Digital Education at School in Europe 2026', shows that the digital transformation is being addressed through various channels, but that there are differences in access, technical support, and digital environments at the school level.

Policy Frameworks and Strategies

While digital infrastructure components are addressed in most education systems, strategies, guidance, or other policy frameworks for artificial intelligence have been developed in approximately two thirds of education systems.

Future Work and the Skills Union

The findings will contribute to the Commission's Skills Union work and provide evidence for the upcoming Education Package, which will address basic skills, teachers and trainers, and digital education infrastructure.
