Leap and learn: AI‑PLAY to turn movement into AI lessons

University of Florida researchers have launched the National Science Foundation-funded AI-PLAY project to help elementary school students understand the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The Purpose of the AI-PLAY Project

University of Florida researchers have launched a new study for elementary school students to learn the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and large language models. Named AI-PLAY, this project aims to increase participation in early-age AI education by making abstract concepts tangible.

Movement-Based Educational Method

Within the scope of the project, students create their own datasets by running, walking, or jumping accompanied by low-cost sensors. Thus, the data generation process turns into both a personal and fun experience for children.

Bias and Datasets in Education

Through the data they collect, students learn advanced concepts such as bias and systematic errors in training sets. Experts state that this tangible approach makes it easier for children to grasp the subject.

Expert Team and Collaboration

The project includes academics from different faculties such as Kristy Boyer, Jennifer Nichols, and Anthony Botelho. The study involves a deep partnership between the university's engineering college and athletic association.

Implementation Schedule and Schools

The program, which will be implemented in Alachua County public schools, covers fourth and fifth-grade students. Following the kickoff meeting at the end of September, software and hardware design will be completed, and classes will begin in January.
