US and China Agree on Tariff Cuts and AI Channel
Following the leaders' summit in Washington, the two countries reached an agreement to ease mutual trade barriers and establish new communication mechanisms.
Following the summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the US and China reached an agreement to lower tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods and establish a communication channel for artificial intelligence incidents.
Agreement Reached After the Summit
The United States and China decided to lower tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods imported from each other. This decision formed part of an eight-point consensus reached during Chinese President Xi Jinping's three-day visit to Washington, which concluded on Friday.
Tariff Reductions and Scope
Under the trade agreement, customs tariffs will be lowered on products deemed non-critical, including agriculture and energy-related goods. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer had discussed reducing these tariffs to most-favored-nation levels in New York.
Extension of the Trade Truce
Treasury Secretary Bessent announced on Wednesday that the Washington and Beijing administrations extended the broader trade truce by two months. This period, moved from November to January, provided officials with additional time for negotiations.
Artificial Intelligence and Communication Channel
The two countries also agreed to establish a channel for managing artificial intelligence-related incidents and to hold discussions on the risks and benefits of the technology. The first AI-focused discussion is planned to take place in November.
Strengthening Military Crisis Communication
The final pillar of the agreement between the US and China was the strengthening of military crisis communication. A memorandum of understanding aimed at preventing potential conflicts between the armed forces of the two countries was planned to be signed.
