The Climate Desk organized an online press conference under the title "Towards COP31: What Are the Expectations from Turkey and the Summit?". During this gathering, the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Antalya two months later was discussed.
Critical Process and Expectations
Marmara University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Semra Cerit Mazlum stated that, contrary to general expectations, COP31 will not be easy. It was conveyed that the U.S. withdrawal from the climate regime, wars, and the oil crisis will complicate the process.
Financing Targets in Jeopardy
It was emphasized at the meeting that the $300 billion financing target is in jeopardy, developing countries are demanding concrete guarantees within the scope of the process, and that they are at a critical stage in climate diplomacy.
Turkey's Presidency Role
Dr. Ümit Şahin stated that Turkey has set targets for electrification and an implementation bridge for the COP presidency. However, it was stated that a clear stance on moving away from fossil fuels has not yet been taken.
