Consumption declines among Portuguese adolescents while risk concentrates in a small group
According to new research in Portugal, consumption and problems among adolescents are generally decreasing, but the riskiest behaviors are concentrated among the most vulnerable youth.
While consumption and problematic behaviors among Portuguese adolescents show a general downward trend, the highest-risk situations are concentrated in a small group of youth carrying high vulnerability.
Scope of the Research and General Trends
New research by the Institute of Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies examines the problematic dimension of addictive behaviors among public school students in Portugal aged 13 to 18.
Decrease in Examined Problematic Situations
Compared to the previous study in 2019, experience rates for violent behaviors, accidents, hospital admissions, risky sexual behaviors, and other events that could produce negative consequences showed a consistent decline.
The Group Where Risks are Concentrated
Against the backdrop of the positive picture, it is stated that across many indicators, the riskiest behaviors are concentrated in a numerically limited group of adolescents and individuals carrying multiple elements of vulnerability.
Trends Varying by Gender
While girls stand out in terms of problematic use of social networks and turning to alcohol to cope with emotional difficulties, boys exhibit higher levels of issues with the police as well as digital gaming and gambling risks.
