2,000-Year-Old Statue of Hadrian Found in the Ancient City of Kibyra
During excavations in Kibyra, a 2,000-year-old armored statue of Roman Emperor Hadrian and an artifact belonging to Empress Sabina were brought to light.
In the excavations at the ancient city of Kibyra carried out within the scope of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Legacy for the Future Project, a 2,14-meter-tall armored statue of the 2,000-year-old Roman Emperor Hadrian and an artifact belonging to Empress Sabina were brought to light at the monumental gateway that collapsed in the 417 AD earthquake.
Works Within the Scope of the Legacy for the Future Project
Excavation work continuing in the ancient city of Kibyra within the framework of the Legacy for the Future Project carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism sheds light on the region's history during the Roman period.
The scientific committee of the excavations, which have been ongoing since 2006, carries out meticulous work to bring the unknown aspects of the ancient city to light.
Excavations Carried Out at the Monumental Gateway
Recent excavation work concentrated on the Monumental City Gateway, one of the city's important structures, enabling the unearthing of marble statue fragments.
It was determined that the artifacts broke after falling from a height during the earthquake that occurred in 417 AD, and a total of 20 statue fragments were found during the excavations.
Re-erection of the Statue of Hadrian
By uniting the portrait head with the previously found armored torso, the approximately 2,14-meter-high statue of Hadrian was successfully re-erected.
Relief lion and eagle figures are featured on the military-type armored statue made of Afyon-Döğer and İscehisar marble.
Other Discovered Historical Artifacts and the Statue of Sabina
Examinations made it clear that one of the four statues belongs to Empress Sabina.
Additionally, another armored emperor statue 1,86 meters tall, a two-piece female statue, and a 30-centimeter male head were found.
Period of the Artifacts and Delivery Process to the Museum
Dated between 117-138 AD and around the 130s AD, the artifacts will be placed under protection after restoration procedures are completed.
It was reported that the historical artifacts will be delivered to the Burdur Museum Directorate following detailed examination and conservation processes.
