Former Prison Opened as Culture, Arts, and Memory House in Pertek
Converted as a result of a three-year effort, the former prison has opened to serve the local community with exhibitions, documentary screenings, and musical performances.
After a three-year project, a former prison in Pertek opened its doors as the Pertek Culture, Arts, and Memory House, serving as a meeting point for culture, art, and social memory.
From Former Prison to Cultural Center
Carrying the traces of the past in Pertek, the former prison was transformed into a meeting point for culture, art, and social memory following a three-year project. With the opening of the center, the chain on the building's door was opened by women, delivering a significant message.
Once known for its closed doors and restrictions, the structure welcomed visitors this time as a space for art, production, and shared memory. The transformation process of the project aims to introduce a new space to the district's social life.
Mulberry and Its People Exhibition
The opening of the center took place with photographer Kamil Fırat's exhibition, "Mulberry and Its People". The exhibition aims to make the labor of people producing mulberries and mulberry products in the region visible.
Emphasizing the history and economic value of centuries-old mulberry trees, this work provides a visual record that will pass Pertek's current life on to future generations.
Opening Program and Events
As part of the opening program, the documentary of the same name, directed by Metehan Aras and produced by Barış Bidav, met with the audience. A musical group prepared under the responsibility of Kemal Sağ from Mustafa Kemal High School also performed a concert.
Future Plans and Sections
Restoration and application projects have been prepared for the center, which has entered service in its current state. It is planned to equip the structure with sections such as a museum, exhibition hall, library, and art gallery while remaining faithful to its original form.
