Journey of Green Sea Turtle Hatchlings Begins on Hatay Samandağ Beaches

Green sea turtle hatchlings emerging from eggs in the Samandağ district of Hatay have begun a challenging and critical journey on the beaches to reach the Mediterranean. Comprehensive measures are being implemented in the region to protect the nests.

Incubation and Hatching Process

The beaches of Samandağ, Çevlik, Meydan, and Tekebaşı are among the most important nesting areas for green sea turtles. Completing their incubation periods, the tiny hatchlings emerge from their eggs waiting for sunrise and take their first steps toward the sea.

Inter-institutional Collaborative Conservation Efforts

The work carried out on the beaches is conducted in cooperation with the Hatay Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, university academics, and local association volunteers. The teams place the nests under protection against external factors.

Measures Taken for Safe Passage

The Metropolitan Municipality, coast guard, gendarmerie, and police teams support keeping the beaches clean and the area under control to ensure the hatchlings can reach the sea safely.

Nest and Egg Statistics

Nuri Akın, the Director of Hatay Nature Conservation and National Parks, stated that between 1,500 and 2,000 nests have been made in the region and approximately 120,000 to 130,000 eggs have been identified, adding that the process is being closely monitored.

Combating Threats and New Projects

Efforts are being made to combat threats such as artificial light, environmental waste, and stray dogs. Additionally, work is underway to establish a Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Chiefdom, and the Mileyha Wetland is also located in the region.
