Number of Museums in Turkey Increased by 4.4 Percent in 2025

According to the 2025 cultural heritage statistics shared by the Turkish Statistical Institute, the total number of museums in the country rose to 664 after recording a 4.4 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Distribution of Museums and Archaeological Sites

While the total number of museums across Turkey stood at 664 in 2025, 220 of these institutions operated under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The private museum category included 426 institutions, while 18 museums operated under the Directorate of National Palaces, and the number of archaeological sites nationwide was recorded as 148.

Artifact Inventory and Types

The total number of artifacts under protection in museums increased by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 4,012,294 items.

Of the artifacts in museums affiliated with the Ministry, 60.4 percent consisted of coins, 27.8 percent of archaeological material, 6.7 percent of ethnographic material, and 3.5 percent of tablets.

Visitor Numbers and Museum Card

The total number of visitors to museums and archaeological sites increased by 6.8 percent in 2025, rising to 65,862,639 people.

A total of 6,804,917 museum cards were sold by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, with the highest visitor numbers observed in Istanbul, Izmir, and Ankara, respectively.

Cultural Assets and Protected Areas

The total number of immovable cultural assets increased by 2.6 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 130,632 items.

Meanwhile, the total number of protected sites increased by 6 percent to reach 27,703, with archaeological sites making up the vast majority of these areas.

National Parks and Conservation Areas

The number of national parks in Turkey increased by 2 percent in 2025, rising to 50.

The number of nature parks increased by 2.2 percent to 274, while the number of nature conservation areas remained unchanged at 32 and nature monuments at 111.
