Letter Sent to Trump
The leaders of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the American Automotive Policy Council, MEMA The Vehicle Suppliers Association, the National Automobile Dealers Association, Autos Drive America, and the Zero Emission Transportation Association sent a letter regarding the matter to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Close Doors to Chinese Manufacturers
The letter called on the Trump administration to maintain policies that firmly keep the door closed to Chinese automakers seeking to sell, import, or manufacture vehicles in the U.S.
Emphasis on Fair Competition
Arguing that granting Chinese automakers the opportunity to manufacture in the U.S. would harm fair competition, the letter stated that this would jeopardize the progress made by the administration.
Market Share and Foothold
The letter noted that Chinese automakers currently have no market share in the U.S., and allowing them to open facilities would provide these companies with an unfair foothold in the market.
Employment and Security Concerns
Issuing an employment warning, it was claimed that the situation would shift manufacturing jobs to Chinese companies, and it was emphasized that assembly does not eliminate security threats.
