US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that if Democrats capture a majority in Congress in the November midterm elections, the plan to reduce the federal budget deficit will have to be rushed through by the end of the year.
Efforts to Reduce the Budget Deficit
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is working jointly with Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought to draft a fiscal consolidation plan that could potentially reduce the federal budget deficit.
According to Congressional Budget Office data, the US government is projected to spend about $2 trillion more than the revenue it generates this year.
Emphasis on the Lame-Duck Period
Bessent emphasized that if Democrats succeed in the midterm elections, the plan will need to be implemented more quickly.
Pointing to the two-month period between the November 3 elections and January 3, 2027, when new members of Congress take office, Bessent described this timeframe as the lame-duck period.
Reasons for the Increase in the Budget Deficit
The US budget deficit has shown a distinct upward trend in recent years.
This increase has been driven by COVID-19 spending during the first Trump administration, spending under the Biden administration, and the tax law and other priorities enacted by Donald Trump.
Current Distribution in Congress
Republicans currently hold majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The party losing control of either chamber would pave the way for Democrats to block Donald Trump's legislative agenda for the remainder of his presidency.
