Commerzbank's Move to Increase Shareholder Returns
German financial institution Commerzbank has announced a new multi-billion-euro program for its shareholders in the shadow of the UniCredit process.
Facing a takeover bid from UniCredit, German bank Commerzbank has announced that it will launch a new share buyback program of up to 1.2 billion euros to increase shareholder returns.
Details of the Share Buyback Program
Commerzbank, which has a market value of around 44 billion euros, announced that the new share buyback program will be implemented on Friday, September 4. It was reported that the planned process will continue until February 10, 2027, at the latest.
Capital Return Statement from Management
Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp emphasized that the attractive capital return policy is being consistently maintained with this new share buyback move.
Planning for Shares to Be Cancelled
Bank management stated that, as applied in the two previous buyback programs, the shares to be purchased during this process will not be sold or retained, but will be directly cancelled.
UniCredit Process and Sectoral Background
Italian bank UniCredit's increase of its stake in Commerzbank to approximately 50 percent in July had led to a weakening of the resistance shown by both the bank management and the German government against a potential takeover attempt.
