Donald Trump Threatens Tariffs on Canada-European Union Partnership
US President Donald Trump announced that if Canada's bid to become an associate member of the European Union harms his country, he will impose heavy tariffs on European products and could halt trade.
US President Donald Trump reacted to Canada's initiative to establish associate member status with the European Union, announcing that if this move is deemed a hostile step against the US, he will resort to new restrictions on trade with Europe.
Canada's EU Associate Membership Initiative
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed that Canada become the European Union's first associate member and stated that she wants to work on this idea together with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The proposal in question was officially brought to the agenda during the State of the Union address held in Strasbourg, France, at a session which Carney also attended.
Trump's Stern Tariff and Trade Warning
Upon questions from the press, US President Donald Trump explicitly stated that they could take stern measures against this rapprochement initiative between Canada and the European Union.
Trump indicated that if he thinks the steps to be taken are malicious, he will impose very serious tariffs on European products and go as far as halting trade with Europe.
