Harvest Excitement for the Geographically Indicated Sarıkılçık Paddy in Çankırı's Ilgaz District
While high yields were achieved this year in the heirloom sarıkılçık paddy in Çankırı's Ilgaz district, it was reported that the product has received a geographical indication.
The harvest season has begun for the geographically indicated sarıkılçık paddy, grown in fields fed by the cold waters of Mount Ilgaz in Çankırı's Ilgaz district, which is noted to be suitable for consumption by diabetes patients.
Harvest Process
Excitement fills the air during the harvest of the geographically indicated sarıkılçık paddy, cultivated in fields fed by the cold waters of Mount Ilgaz in Çankırı's Ilgaz district. Heading to the fields in the early hours of the morning, producers transport the harvested paddy by tractors to the threshing floor, where they spread it on tarps to dry. After going through drying and processing stages, the paddy requires great effort before being turned into rice and delivered to dinner tables.
Production Information
Recai Küsmenoğlu, a paddy producer in Sarmaşık village, stated that he grows the sarıkılçık variety of paddy on an area of approximately 25 decares. Küsmenoğlu noted that sarıkılçık paddy is produced on an area of about 3,000 decares in Ilgaz, yielding 750 tons of rice from 1,500 tons of paddy production across the district.
Characteristics and Geographical Indication
Stating that the sarıkılçık paddy is an heirloom seed and contains no sugar, Küsmenoğlu said that diabetes patients can consume this variety with peace of mind. Recalling that the product received a geographical indication in June of this year, producers noted that this situation will provide added value and play an important role in introducing the product to Turkey and the world.
