The Capital Markets Board's liquidation of funds belonging to certain portfolio management companies has brought about a wide range of debates and economic risks, from corporate financing conditions to investor confidence.

The Beginning of Fund Liquidations

On September 17, the Capital Markets Board placed 131 funds belonging to seven portfolio management companies into liquidation, while also closing 170 funds to trading.

According to Central Registry Agency data, there were 455,758 unique investors in the funds covered by the liquidation.

Companies' Borrowing Process

Intense outflows from money market funds could reduce demand for bonds and bills issued by companies, making it harder for them to borrow.

Finance expert Prof. Dr. Evren Bolgün states that this situation could make it difficult for companies to pay their maturing debt and create higher costs.

Initial Public Offerings and Market Uncertainty

Uncertainties in the markets and weakening investor demand could make it harder for companies to raise capital by selling shares, leading to delays in initial public offerings in the short term.

However, besides the fund crisis, interest rates and general market conditions also play a decisive role in initial public offering decisions.

Liquidity Risk of Assets

According to Gedik Investment analysis, it is calculated that a significant portion of the assets in the funds subject to liquidation carries liquidity risk.

While attempts to rapidly sell assets with limited liquidity can put pressure on prices, the analysis indicates that this problem is particularly concentrated in three major funds.

Broad Investor Base

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Oyan states that the effects of the crisis are not limited to the liquidated funds but also reflect on the BIST 100 and banking indices.

Evren Bolgün, on the other hand, expresses that approximately 11 million investors, directly and indirectly, could be affected by this process.

Foreign Capital and Growth Impact

It is projected that potential changes in foreign investors' decisions could affect Turkey's access to external financing and economic growth.

Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan, meanwhile, stated that the risk of the crisis spreading to the broader financial system remains limited and additional measures have been taken.

Investor Confidence and the Liquidation Process

It is emphasized that for confidence to be restored in financial markets, the liquidation process must be conducted transparently and regular information updates must be provided.

The CMB announced that unusual price movements in stocks with low actual free float were discussed in the Financial Stability Committee and new regulations are being made.

Payment Mechanisms for Investors

While Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek announced that investor funds in certain accounts have been transferred to banks, interim payment mechanisms have been envisaged for other funds.

Cevdet Yılmaz stated that Treasury resources will not be used for payments, while Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek noted that the amounts identified within the scope of the investigation are being examined as illicit gains.
